The Light shapes the Shadow - The Shadow reveals the Light

I spent years trying to live in the light.
Not consciously at first.
But looking back, I can see it clearly now.

I wanted to be the good version of myself.

The strong one.
The positive one.
The healed one.

So every part of me that felt heavy, messy, ashamed, angry, afraid or broken got pushed further into the dark.

And for a while, I became very good at hiding it.

I could still smile.
Still function.
Still keep certain parts of my life looking beautiful from the outside.

But underneath, there was exhaustion.
Disconnection.
Years of suffering I didn’t fully know how to face.

Alcohol became one of the ways I tried to quiet everything I didn’t want to sit with.
Not because I wanted to destroy myself.
Because I didn’t know how to hold all the parts of me at once.

I thought healing meant getting rid of the darkness.
I thought the goal was to finally become “light enough.”
But life has a way of bringing us back to ourselves.
And at some point, I stopped trying to outrun what hurt.

I stopped trying to only keep the bright parts polished while hiding the rest in silence.
I started listening.

To the grief.
To the fear.
To the anger.
To the emptiness.
To the patterns I wanted to pretend weren’t there.

Not to drown in them.
Not to become them.
But to understand what they were trying to show me.

And strangely enough… that’s when the light became real.

Not performative.
Not forced.
Not something I had to maintain all the time.

Something deeper.
Because the shadow never erased the light.

It gave it depth.
Shape.
Meaning.

That’s the heart behind this piece.
Light shapes the shadow.
Shadow reveals the light.

Not opposites.
Not enemies.
A conversation.

And maybe healing was never about becoming only light.
Maybe it was about finally having the courage to be whole.
